Who’s Making All The Money?

The annual accountancy rich list from Economia has been released this month giving a great insight into the inspiring leaders in industry. The list was compiled by Philip Beresford who has been creating the Sunday Times rich list since 1989.

The list has revealed there has been a rise in Billionaire statuses from 8 last year to 14 this year which considering the current economic climate is pretty good going. Interestingly only 2 out of the 100 who made the list are women which seems to be the trend mirrored in the complete Sunday Times rich list.

How were the entries considered?

Many factors were considered to decide who would get a chance to be included, such as whether those looked at hold stakes in businesses worth £30m or more, the sale prices achieved for companies and most importantly, whether they hold an accountancy qualification or are trained as an accountant.

Who’s Included?

Those included in the 100 list have worked in a wide range of fields from property to retail and food since starting out in accounting. Take a look below for the top 10!

The top spot was taken by Denise Coates who founded the gambling company Bet365 based in the Potteries. Having trained to be an accountant her knowledge and experience led her to recognise the growing trends online which is where she has built her fortune. Today Bet365 is reportedly worth £4.5bn.

Coming in at joint bottom are Matthew Allen in Finance, Mike Gaskell in Construction, Aidan Heavey in oil and Julie Mahoney & family in general industry, with each boasting a worth of £60 million each, which still isn’t bad going if you ask me!

So, what makes these people so successful?

Many names on the list credited their background in accountancy as part of their success.  Being able to make smart decisions and knowing when to go for something when you believe in it are important skills to have if you want to succeed.

Of course, most of the 100 have made their money through investments and developments in other industries rather than accountancy alone, so don’t feel too disheartened. Rather what this list does is highlight the characteristics and knowledge gained from their time in accountancy and how they have used this to further their careers in other fields.
